HET GARAGEKOOR
About us
Then and now
The Garagekoor (Garage Choir) in Borgerhout originated in 2018 from a project to bring local residents of the Luisbekelaar social residential area and the surrounding area together. Once a week, about thirty people now gather in the Theatergarage to sing together under professional guidance. All ages and all walks of life feel at home here. It's a nice, warm group.

We want to make our choir accessible to everyone, including those on low incomes. That is also why people do not need to pay to join us. We applied for several subsidies with which we used to pay for choir supervision and rent for the Theatre Garage until now. In September 2022, it looked like the choir would have to stop due to lack of money. We then raised a cry for help, which was taken up by newspapers and ATV (Antwerp Television).

Choir season 2022 - 2023
The choir is now - summer break 2023 - five years old and has 50 enrolled members. Every week, between 25 to 30 singers turn up for an hour and a half of rehearsal. We rehearsed 32 times this season. All in all, our choir has already sung at least 68 songs, including 14 new ones this year. We are polyglots: we sing in Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Zulu (South Africa), Wolof and Peul (Senegal). And don't underestimate our singing skills: our tonal range covers 3 octaves!
