About us

Then ...

The Garagekoor originated in 2019 from a project of Samenlevingsopbouw Antwerpen stad vzw to bring together local residents of the social housing district Luisbekelaar (Borgerhout) and its surroundings.
The Garagekoor became a low-threshold place of connection where people from different backgrounds could meet and sing together. Volunteers carried the choir, along with two enthusiasts who pulled the cart.

After the project ended, the choir did continue to exist, funded by grants from external partners and the Borgerhout district's association grant.

During the corona period - of necessity - no singing was possible.

Since 2021 we have been meeting once a week with about thirty people at the Theater Garage in Borgerhout, to sing together under professional coaching. We work with great dedication toward the annual show moment and the occasional performances and we intensely enjoy the time itself.

Singing together is incredibly unifying. We consciously choose to be a social neighborhood choir in which every resident feels good. We look at what people have in common and what they can do, not at the differences. No one is judged on singing ability and no prior knowledge is required. We form a friendly, warm group.

We cooperate structurally with the Theatergarage, the place where the Garage Choir rehearses and to which it owes its name.
